Open Water Scuba Diver:
A scuba diving certification or ‘Open Water Diver certification’ allows you to dive anywhere in the world. Similar to driving a car, scuba diving requires specific knowledge, skills and training. Scuba diving is not just another sport; it’s a transformative experience that allows you to witness life under the waves. It is an activity that can be enjoyed at almost any age and can be combined with travel to some of the most beautiful and remote destinations in the world. Certification is your ticket to these experiences and the starting point for many more advanced diving opportunities. A SDI Open Water Diver certification is your global passport to underwater adventure.
Course prerequisites
Minimum age 18, 15 with parental consent
See Junior Open Water Scuba Diver Course here. (10 – 14 years old)
Start your SDI Open Water Scuba Diver course and master all the important academic information online or with us in the Club. You can complete this phase through self-study, at your own pace, in the convenience of your home or office. All eLearning courses work on mobile and tablet devices too.
For entry-level certification courses (as well as some continuing-education classes), the next step will be to complete your in-water skill-development training. This takes place in a swimming pool or similar body of confined water, under the supervision of an SDI Instructor.
The final step is to complete the required number of SDI open-water training dives under the supervision of an SDI Instructor. Here you will apply what you have learned during your academic and skill-development sessions, while learning practical lessons that can only be gained through real-world experience in open water.
Upon successful completion of this course, you'll be qualified to:
1. Conduct open water dives in conditions similar to your training to a maximum depth of 18 meters.
2. Conduct dives with other certified divers at the same or higher level of certification.
3. Conduct dives that do not require decompression.
4. Enroll in the Advanced Adventure Diver program, individual SDI Specialties or the SDI Advanced Diver Development program
